A Step in the Water

God can perform miracles to help us accomplish our goals

When Elijah and Elisha came across the Jordan River during their ministry, scriptures tell us that, “Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped it together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.” 1

A priesthood leader once asked me, “When the river parted, where along the bank of the river do you think Elijah was standing?”

I made a few guesses, but I wasn’t sure. The scriptures didn’t include that specific detail.

After I pondered a while, my priesthood leader suggested that he wasn’t on the bank at all.

“Maybe,” he said, “Elijah didn’t wait for the river to part before he started walking across it. His faith was so strong, perhaps, that he walked into the water with no hesitation, just like the children of Israel when they carried the ark of the covenant over that same river. 2 Because of Elijah’s unyielding faith, God was bound to part the water for him.”In BYU-Pathway, we might be tempted to give up, or feel like a task is too difficult. Through those difficult times, we have to remember that “with God all things are possible,” 3 and He will perform miracles as long as we don’t hesitate to exercise our faith in Him.

Sometimes, we just need to step into the water.
