The Remedy to Unfairness

Elder Renlund reminds us how Christ’s perfect love can help us bear all things

Many of us could make a long list of things we or others face in life that feel unfair: bouts with cancer, an unexpected death in the family, a learning or physical disability, a loved one who struggles with addiction or leaves their faith, infertility, financial struggles, even the sacrifices we make for education — the list could go on. Unfairness can be difficult to understand and cope with.

When we focus on the things weighing us down, remembering the Savior’s loving sacrifice can help. With His empathy and atoning power, we “can do all things.”¹

Because of Him

Because Christ atoned for us, we never have to struggle alone.

We don’t have to overcome our challenges alone. Christ is always at our side. In Elder Dale G. Renlund’s April 2021 General Conference message, he teaches three things to remember about unfairness.²

1. “All that is unfair about life can be made right through the Atonement of Jesus Christ.”
2. “Because of Him, we can have peace in this world and be of good cheer [despite unfairness].”
3. “If we let Him, Jesus Christ will consecrate the unfairness for our gain.”

We do not know when or how we will receive the Savior’s divine help, but we do know Christ will help us overcome what is holding us back — if we let Him. Elder Renlund assures us, “Jesus Christ both understands unfairness and has the power to provide a remedy.”

Education combats unfairness

While the sacrifices required to earn a degree may seem unfair, education itself is a tool that can help us rise above unfairness in our lives.

When we make education a priority, we receive many blessings. Job opportunities that were once out of reach become possible. We become self-reliant. We learn how to be better leaders and decision-makers.

A spiritual education combats unfairness as well. When we strengthen our faith in Jesus Christ, some burdens may be lifted, while others may be “made light.”³ The combination of academic and spiritual learning is a special blessing BYU-Pathway students receive that is helping them rise above their challenges.

The reward of education and endurance

Twenty years ago, Guenia was a student at BYU in Provo, but after completing only two semesters, her Visa renewal was denied. “My educational dream of graduating from a Church school was shattered,” she said. But after finishing her mission and attending a local university, she was prompted to enroll in BYU-Pathway.

“To say it was hard to balance my work, life, and school is an understatement,” she said. “However, being a PathwayConnect student has been one of the most spiritually uplifting experiences of my life. … My dream was not taken away from me; it just took a long detour and now, as a married adult  with children, the experience is even more meaningful than it was when I was a late teen.”

Alexander started at BYU-Pathway to continue his education, but his journey was cut short. Just weeks into his first semester, a hurricane hit American Samoa and left him without electricity. He withdrew and tried again a year later. But three weeks after courses started, his house caught fire, and he had to withdraw. While these trials are enough to discourage anyone, Alexander didn’t let his unfair circumstances stop his education.

He enrolled again, and this time he was successful. “I am so grateful that I didn’t give up because I am able to better serve others because of the additional knowledge I am gaining through education,” he said. “I have been blessed tremendously by keeping this commandment of the Lord.”

Finding hope

It can be difficult coming to terms with the parts of life that feel unfair. But seeking the Savior through prayer, including Him in your studies, and living worthy of His Spirit will allow His grace to transform the way you see unfairness. So keep pursuing your education, even if the odds seem impossible — His love can be your remedy, your inspiration, and your strength. You are not alone!
