"The pandemic has been very difficult for everyone—including my family. My wife got Covid-19 during her third pregnancy in the 8th month which was so devastating for us. On top of that, I was in the process of applying for a doctorate degree and although I made it to the last round of interviews, my application was denied. I wondered what I was supposed to do next. I had invested years in school since 2011, and now it looked like 2020 would be the first year I wouldn’t be able to attend school. I didn’t know if I would be able to keep my family excited about education or keep my studies up to date.

“As stake president, I attended an institute class where I was told to announce the upcoming enrollment period for BYU-Pathway was August 2020. Something different happened in that moment. I felt great joy in my heart, my mind felt full of light, and I felt hope again. I have never felt so many feelings all at once while simply making an announcement.

“So although I didn’t exactly know what would happen, I decided to enroll in BYU-Pathway. I knew it could be an answer to my prayer to help me continue to reach my goal. Initially, I was concerned when I started PathwayConnect because there were many math assignments and the certificate wouldn’t have an equivalent to the curriculum in Brazil. During this difficult time, I learned I could improve the circumstances of my life by having a “growth mindset” instead of a “closed mindset.”

“When I finish PathwayConnect in August 2021, I hope to help inspire others to participate. I feel like I will have the power to invite more people to join PathwayConnect because I will have finished it too and know what it is like. BYU-Pathway helped me cheer up and now I feel more prepared to apply for my doctorate degree."
