7 Reasons Why YOU Should Be a Speaking Partner

PathwayConnect's Speaking Partner Program provides many unique opportunities for volunteers in the program

Did you know that YOU can help students around the world learn English?

Since its creation, PathwayConnect has helped thousands of students improve their ability to speak and comprehend English. In large part, this is due to the Speaking Partner Program, which connects English-learning students with native, English-speaking mentors who volunteer to help the students practice the language through weekly, online conversations.

The Speaking Partner Program has helped thousands of PathwayConnect students improve their English speaking and comprehension skills.

The Speaking Partner Program operates through these volunteers, but as BYU-Pathway continues to grow and serve more students across the world, the need for more volunteers increases as well. Through the Speaking Partner Program, YOU can be a means to bless the lives of many students in need.

Here are seven reasons why you should volunteer to be a speaking partner mentor in PathwayConnect:

1. Being a speaking partner mentor is EASY

Being a speaking partner mentor may sound time consuming, but the truth is, it isn’t. After being assigned a student to help, all you will need to do is schedule a time each week for 12 weeks to have a brief, 30-minute discussion via video conference. It’s that simple! And don’t worry about not knowing what to talk about. Each student will have weekly instructions about what to discuss. All you need to do is talk!

Being a speaking partner mentor is easy. All that is required of you is to simply talk with your assigned student once a week for 12 weeks.

2. The REQUIREMENTS to serve are simple

Becoming a speaking partner mentor is easy. To serve, all you need is to:

  • Speak English fluently
  • Be a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a PathwayConnect student, or a Brigham Young University-Idaho student
  • Be 18 years old or older
  • Participate in 12 weekly, 30-minute discussions with the student assigned to you

3. There is NO TEACHING involved

Although at first speaking partner mentors may sound like English teachers, they are not. Students already have lessons that teach them English-language principles. All they need is a native English speaker with whom they can practice those principles. The only thing required of speaking partner mentors is that they listen and talk with the students each week.

Speaking partner mentors are not teachers. As a mentor, you will simply converse with your assigned student and allow them to practice the principles they are learning.

4. It’s a great SERVICE opportunity

By becoming a speaking partner mentor, you will be offering a huge service to a student who would not be able to develop their English as well without your help. Increased language skills often lead to better jobs for students around the world. If you are looking for ways to serve, becoming a speaking partner mentor is a great and easy opportunity.

5. Being a speaking partner mentor is FUN

As a speaking partner mentor, you will have the unique opportunity to connect with students from all over the world — places like Ecuador, the Philippines, or Nigeria — and learn about different cultures as you help them improve their English. Like many other mentors, you will feel great joy as you befriend your assigned student.

6. It’s an opportunity to GIVE BACK to PathwayConnect

If you were a PathwayConnect student, you know the hope, faith, and increased confidence many students experience as they work through the program. As a past recipient of those blessings yourself, you have a unique opportunity to help and encourage someone who is in a similar position as you were during your time in the program. That unique opportunity will be just as much a blessing to you as it is to the student you will be helping.

7. PathwayConnect students NEED you

The success of the Speaking Partner Program and the students who participate in it greatly depends on actually having volunteers with whom the students can talk and practice the language principles they are learning. Without speaking partner mentors, there is no Speaking Partner Program. You have an opportunity to fulfill that need and help PathwayConnect students become successful and skillful English speakers.

English-learning PathwayConnect students need the help of speaking partner mentors to practice English principles. Without those volunteers, there is no Speaking Partner Program.

“Because I Have Been Given Much…”

As a native English speaker, you have a unique ability and opportunity to bless the life of an English-learning PathwayConnect student somewhere in the world. Through the Speaking Partner Program, you can be a mighty influence to help someone develop a skill that will greatly improve the quality of his or her life for years to come.

Roseli says:

I am a PathwayConnect student, so I’ve been having a hard time to find a speaking partner on this site, because every time I access the site to look up for some information I find them about becoming a mentor and not how to find one. Then, How can I find a speaking partner?
Thanks!
